I have a Scott Hungary #P8 with an inverted watermark. Scott lists a P8a with a horizontal watermark but not one that is inverted. Is this a known variation of P8? Or do I have something unique?

I'm not sure what Scott illustrates, but this looks like Gibbons's illustration of the standard watermark. I think the design alternates in each direction through the sheet, so that may explain the appearance of "inversion".

Here's the Scott image for that watermark.

The cross alternates between upright and inverted, so 50% of the population will have the upright cross; the other 50% the inverted cross.

Yep. Your image of the reverse also shows part of a neighboring cross that is upright, though I admit its difficult to see if this is your only example of the watermark.
