Uprated Postal Card To Germany

Can any of you German speaking members make out where this card was sent to - the name of the town?

I'm not a German speaker, but it looks like Rathenow to me.

Don't speak German but the town is Rathenow on the Havel (river) about 70 kilometers west of Berlin

any ideas what the lines under Rathenow read?

I think it's a street address.

Many German streets end in "strasse" or "straße" (meaning "street"), and as in English, these are commonly abbreviated to "str." If you look carefully at the second word, it ends in a sloppy "str." With the Kurrent script that was popular in Germany at that time, the letter "s", when used in the middle of a word, looks like this:



Neither the "t" or "r" are fully formed, but the base strokes are there. And there's a period indicating an abbreviation.

I haven't been able to decipher the beginnings of the words, but let me see what Google has to say...

Looks like the last word is "Haupt__straße".

The "H" was throwing me, since it doesn't match the "H" in the name. There are clearly two different scripts, one for the name and one for the address. The name is in an English-taught cursive script, while the address is in German Kurrent.

PostmasterGS you are probably correct. An easy guess would be "Hauptbahnhofstrasse" (main train station street), since this street would be a main thoroughfare in many German towns of the period.
