Dating A Postcard Of The Glasgow Bridge

Dating a Postcard of the Glasgow Bridge, Scotland, UK:



This 1865 photo (below) shows the bridge with its original gas lights along the sides, and no railway bridge.

(That paddle-steamer, across the river, is docked right where the railway bridge would be built.)



This post-1899 (below) photo shows the newly-widened bridge, with electric lights down the center of the bridge.

At the far left, you can see the 1st Caledonian Railway Bridge (hereinafter 'CRB1').

CRB1 was demolished in 1967.



Q/ Looking in my card, under CRB1, are those the first pilings for CRB2? (opened 1905)



- The widened Glasgow Bridge opened 1899; and

- The railway bridge (CRB1) was already electrified in 1902; so

- That puts my card in 1899-1902.

True!

In his magnificent "The Postcard Century: 2000 Cards and their Messages", (ISBN 9780500975909) author Tom Phillips begins each year with one postcard of Piccadilly Circus and one of New York City and, sure enough, in the entry for the first year (1900) he begins by noting the time lag between an image and its postcard. Duh!
