It was not until Reagan was a living President shown on a stamp. It should never have happen. US tradition had been honor the dead, let the living earn it.

warrehouse, I read somewhere that the USPS didn't allow living people on a stamp. I think it said they had to be dead 5 years? It is an older book, have the "rules" changed?


Ok, I checked, this is what the USPS site says:

2. No living person shall be honored by portrayal on U.S. postage.

3. Commemorative stamps or postal stationery items honoring individuals usually will be issued on, or in conjunction with significant anniversaries of their birth, but no postal item will be issued sooner than five years after the individual's death. The Committee will not accept or consider proposals for a subject until at least three years after his/her death. The only exception to the five-year rule is the issuance of stamps honoring deceased U.S. presidents. They may be honored with a memorial stamp on the first birth anniversary following death.

I realize that there's a difference between this and honoring someone specific by name, but just sayin'...

You're correct (how could you not be -- citing the rules :-)

But there are always exceptions -- for example, the recent Star Wars series of stamps featured Harrison Ford. But the post office said the stamp did not feature or honor Harrison Ford, but rather the character, Han Solo.

Precancels Finally. Bureau's. The additional overprint 'SRC' with date is Sears. CMO is for Chicago Mail Order.

On the Reagan issue I was refering to the 1986 Ameripex sheets of the Presidents, But that ended with L.B. Johnson. So I was mistaken. I could have sworn it happened, but maybe I saw "faux" issue by some artist the mimiced that series. I don't know.

I will soon post a picture of mine, as well! They are a nice series- I have always liked anything linked with American Presidents.

G'Day all,I've just brought an old U.S.album with stamps still in it and received it yesterday,turned to the 1938 section and was surprised to see a full page of prexies,the next page is missing the last two highest denomination but still a nice surprise.

OK, so here are some Martha Washington precancels:



We have Lees Summit and Kansas City MO,New York and Rochester NY, Philadelphia and Evanston IL.

So to me it appears that the New York and Philadelphia stamps are coils. How did they precancel a coil of stamps? Did they just unwind it and then roll it back up? That seems a little labor intensive, but maybe it went quick once you got the knack.

We have Philadelphia and Rahway(?) NJ, Kansas City is the top middle which is hard to read, New York and Lees Summit MO.

I also have that bottom middle stamp which says "GPO". Anyone have any clue what that means?
