I have a stamp from Haiti that was included in a recent lot purchase that I have been unable to identify. I saw in the 2014 Scott catalogue that "a sheet of various demonimations ... and a sheet of eight 25g stamp[s] ... have been determined to be bogus issues." Does anyone know if this stamp is one of those bogus stamps or has anyone identified it? Thanks so much for your help!

it is from an un-official set released in 1975. there are 15 different bird designs, with 4 denominations for each design. The woodpecker design that you have was issued in 5 centime and 2.50 gourdes, plus 25 centime and 5 gourdes airmail.
all of them that I have seen that were CTO are dated in late Feb. of 1975 from Port-au-Prince, with both a single circle and double circle cancel. (yours appears to be the single circle)

Thank you kuhli and Timm. Very fascinating reading. I've added the excerpt from Ms. Abbott's book to my album page. Now that I know they're from 1975, I see the note in Scott's Catalogue about the Audobon Birds, where it is noted that there are 75 different stamps, being 5 denominations each for the 15 designs. The single stamp I have is so beautiful, I hope to find more to go with it.

Msdot281, if you really go for this stuff, check the bidstart site, also called stampwants. If you enter "Haiti Audubon" in the search box, you get a whole bunch of these!

A line in the page Timm linked to reads:

Quote:
Le Matin of 9 April (before the trial) reported that the Haitian "accomplices" were "cheated" out of $23 million in profits from the stamps, receiving only 20% of the sale proceeds.

Is that realistic? It boggles my mind that a single set - though admittedly a large set - from a country I never considered as having much of a new-issue following could generate revenue of that magnitude. How does, or did, that work?
