I am a returning collector. I'm wondering how many collections people actively work on.

Right now I am starting to fill a vol 1a Big Blue. I also have some scandinavian specialty albums. I am also building a Greek stamp collection in a stockbook.

I could start adding to a collection based on engravers.

Too much?

To answer your last question first: there's no such thing as "too much" when it comes to stamps

Right now I'm working on the many facets of my German collection, but I still dabble with my Netherlands, Hong Kong, India, Algeria, Russia, Sudan, France, US postal history, Victoria, etc. etc. collections.

Variety keeps stamp collecting interesting for me.

Whatever you're comfortable with. I find myself spending more time on the FDC's and I'm experimenting with new ideas.

Hard to figure. I have collected most all the stamps I've been interested it (U.S. airmail and aviation themed stamps). I do collect FDC's for these, and there is almost an endless variety of those. I am working on an exhibit that has me accumulating a lot of WWII patriotic covers, and a few related stamps. After I finish that, who knows?

I just have one collection...WW 1840-1940, but of course that is made up of hundreds of individual countries I just don't consider them separate collections.

I am working on 'a' collection that four generations of family contributed to. If there was such a thing as 'too much', then one might say I could be in big trouble, particularly since, 14 months ago, I knew nothing about philately.

I agree with Jenny2U, it is the variety, that has held my interest, and rapt attention.

Most of my time has been spent on the US Classics, which is a 'postmark and cancel collection'. Once I got into the 20th century, I found the 'series' part of the collection. Sometimes I take a break from all the red Georges and blue Bens of the classics, and work on the Liberty, Great Americans, Prominent Americans, or Transportation collections. Or, I skip to 'the end' working towards rescuing the last of the stamps that will bring me into the 21st century. (I'm up to 1994, so I'm getting there).

I can't wait to get to the foreign collection.

It's been an overwhelming, and daunting task, to put the accumulation into some sort of order, and making it a 'collection', or 'sub-collections', but I've never considered it 'too much', other than perhaps, 'too much fun', as I've taken great joy in the things I've learned.

Since you say you are a 'returning collector', I say 'Welcome back!' and, if your heart wants to start a collection on engravers, go for it. May it bring you great joy and new discoveries.

Welcome to another Big Blue collector. John Apfelbaum in his blog said that at one time most collectors kept a worldwide album in addition to whatever specialty collections they might have. I've always thought that made sense. Just don't get carried away. You still have the International Part Ib to look forward to after you've completed Ia.

I have three generations of Collecting.
It seems that everyone had there own thing going on.
Some Collected in the large Scott albums and put them in the right places.
Others Liked Stock books Didnt Id it just put it in the books .You ever tried to ID 1000 carmines its a task.Than you open another and there is another see of red.
Than we have the find a stamp put it in a envelope and put it in a box than make another after that one is full and repeat.
Over and Over and over. You never know what you will find when you open one.lol

Officially, I collect only Canada, however, throughout the years I have accumulated a number of stamps from other nations around the world. I'm not always successful at getting these into the hands of other collectors, but I keep trying. While one country is enough for me,I still get satisfaction and pleasure from looking at the stamps of other countries even if I don't keep them.

Welcome to the forum and congratulations on returning to the hobby.

I collect used Canadian issued prior to 1970. I recently bought a WW collection from a nearby gentleman and there are several countries included that might have me expanding my horizon.

JRockne, Floortrader is being funny. Yes, he has only one collection but it has hundreds of thousands of stamps in it.

To Floortrader: "just one collection" -- yeah, sure. We all appreciate your contributions, even when you are playing the aw shucks card.
