In the beginning of any stamp production there is the design.

Wether it looks pretty or ugly, interesting or blah,
somebody had to come up with something to put on that stamp
and that is the designer.

I was hoping to have a thread about stamp designers
here on SCF just like the engravers thread but it didn't
happen.

There is a thread about designers on another forum started
by SCF member canadian.
He has contacted many designers (also engravers) over the years
who provided him with first hand knowledge about the stamps they worked on.

Great, lithograving. Cheers!

See e.g. what Ian Greenwood has published in three parts on the designer Dubasov on http://stamporama.com/articles/disp...Az03ysxwyrxE .

Designers, too, deserve recognition.

Florian, thanks for the Dubasov link.

Even though I don't collect USSR/Russia I
like many of the stamp designs especially
issues from the 1930's.
They were ahead of other countries in stamp design
in my opinion.
Propaganda sure, kitsch yes but never dull.

Also their printing companies used every variety of
print processes..... typography,stone lithography,
offset lithography,line engraving,photogravure, embossing
and any number of combination printing.

graphis, glad you liked it. He was/is in contact with
so many engravers and designers and gathered invaluable
information which might be lost otherwise.

Here is a link to Giorgio Leccese' impressive collection of original stamp designs by French artist designers / engravers compared with the actual stamps based on them:

It is very interesting to compare the various approaches: starting from a rough sketch given a definite form by few characteristic masterly cuts with the burin on the die as practised by Albert Decaris or elaborate designs leading to equally beautiful engravings.
