I thought I would start a new thread for covers. I'm just getting around to the covers I picked up at StampShow last month. Here is a crash cover from Daggett, CA 1960. I also show the cover it was forwarded in. I bought it because it fit into my "I don't have one of them" category.

Here are a few fancy cancels. The top postal card is a shield from Maynard, Iowa. The second cover is a Philadelphia Heart. |

Initials "CS" from Greenfield, MA. I checked the Postmaster Finder site but it started in 1918 so I am not sure if these are someone's initials. |

The Official Register of the United States, 1889, Volume II, page 850, lists Charles H. Slocomb as a clerk in Greenfield, Mass. The volume is scanned and online at the babel.hathitrust.com website. |

This cover caught my eye because of a few things. It is from a fire insurance company and that is one of my interests. It has an RPO cancel another interest and I like the bold letter "E" cancel indicating it was on an east bound train. |

Here is a very nice strike of a Chicago Blue Patent cancel on an UX5. The pin marks in the center of the cancel that were used to keep stamps from being reused shows up nice on this card and shows the pins puncturing the card. |

John Becker, Thanks for that bit of information. I will add it to my cover description.

The Daggett fire covers are actually pretty common, so far as these things go. But they are certainly less often seen with the "ambulance" cover. |

More covers and cards. The first cover is from Farmingham, MI with a letter "A" cancel. The second cover comes from Lawrence, MA with a negative "M" cancel. The postmaster from 8/1/61 until 8/2/86 was George S. Merrill, so assume it is his initial. The next cover is from Big Rapids, MI with a negative "AC" cancel I could not find the find the postmaster's name from the period so I'm not sure of their meaning. It is not a common cancel but I do have several more copies off cover. The postal card is a UX3 with a blue hart cancel from Hart, MI. |

The damaged Daggett, California cover is nice, but it is not actually a crash cover. On March 28, 1960 at 7 pm a fire was noticed in the mail car on Santa Fe Train #19. The train was brought in to the Santa Fe Rail yard at Barstow and the fire was extinguished, mail was damaged by fire & the water that put out the fire. Unlike aircraft or ship disaster covers, such regular damaged in handling covers do not often command more than a couple of dollars, but I think they are interesting and would make an inexpensive but fun collecting area. |
