New Queen Elizabeth II Booklet

Hi,

I bought a copy of the new booklet at my postal outlet today:




The P-stamp honours the reign of Queen Elizabeth II. She surpassed the reign of Queen Victoria on the 9th of September 2015, 63 year and 216 days and counting, to become Britain's longest reigning monarch.

Apparently there was only a booklet of 10 of the P-stamps issued. No souvenir sheets nor other rates.

An Historic... (Good Lord...)

KGB: I was a bit surprised that it wasn't "An Historic Reign".

I'm sure Lizzie would agree with the "an," as do I. Yet I'm totally ignorant as to the actual rule..

"An" before "Historic", Historian, History, etc is just plain wrong
It is only right (pick one or more of the following) if you speak:
1) without aspirating "H"
2) French
3) Cockney
4) with a pretentious attitude
5) while ignoring the basic rules for use of indefinite articles
6) really, really olde English
7) wrongly thinking the "H" is silent (like 'p' in 'swimming')
8) incorrectly
9) like you're trying too hard to be a misguided broadcaster
10)as if you want to sound posh

That's A HISTORIC event!
Now, if we could only get people to stop saying Yooge, Yooman and Yooston (Texas).

vfstamp, my English teacher, in a Dutch high school, gave us this simple rule: "If one pronounces the H it is a, if one does not pronounce the H it is an".
Thus 'A history', but 'an hour'.
