Not sure how I fell into collecting Greece. It does not seem to be one of the popular countries to collect.

I am enjoying it.

Anyone else?

I don't collect Greece, but somehow fell into collecting Crete a few years ago. It is fun, what with the different postal agencies from European mainland colonialists, as well as the Cretan provisional government and revolutionary assembly. I collect postally used stamps from Crete, and there is also quite quite a bit of interest to be had there.

I collect Scandinavia, country after country, for some time now because a dealer buy my collections when i'm done. But I also collect some thematic that are not that popular and enjoy it very much. I use to have a huge Olympics collection with a partial set of the 1896 Greece first Olympic stamps set. I missed 2 expensive stamps in that set, at least for me. If you get deeply into building a good collection of classical Greece stamps you will have to spend a lot of money. As for my thematic collections I sold them also to dealer but for less than expected. I have no regrets just the desire to continue to collect and enjoy the relaxing moments doing so. Daniel

Hi Tim,

My main collecting area is Crete including the foreign post offices. It's a fascinating area.

Collecting Greece, Crete, Cyprus, Ionian Isles, Mount Athos etc., are some of my favorites.

Not sure why you would believe it's not popular, I think it's all the Rave.

Regards,

I collect Sweden and Denmark, both pretty dead countries. The good thing about dead countries is that you can get a lot of stuff at bargain basement prices. which just adds to the pleasure of collecting, at least in my opinion.

I've got a large collection of unorganized Sweden. That is (was) going to be my next chore. But I think I might look at Crete. That could be a nice addtion.

I also have a Big Blue that desperately needs attention.

The page http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0762137.html shows the top 34 "Ancestry of U.S. Population by Rank", as people in 2000 and 2011 identified themselves. Some interesting shifts in rank and totals between the two years, but I note that Greece is second to last in 2000 and last in 2011.

People are more likely to collect stamps from their own country or countries that their ancestors came from, and relatively few Americans have Greek ancestors. And Greece has always been a relatively poor country, as European countries go, so I would expect relatively fewer local collectors.

Would anyone be interested in my Greece Collection? I posted it with scans on ebay! I appreciate your interest and your bid! Thank you! I have several other countries listed also all from the same very old collection pre 1940's. The collector may have went off to war is what I suspect. These are not Dealer overstock either!

Your Greece collection is seriously overpriced. I doubt it would sell at even $40 - your stamps are all short sets with minimum catalog price (missing high values).

Unfortunately, we all like to think that our stamps are all RARE and worth hundreds, but the reality is often different. You should decide if you really want to sell your stamps (at a fair market value) or hold on to them forever.

Jenny- I completely agree. When I saw the starting bid I was very surprised. Of the 1.3 million US citizens who identify as having a Greek national heritage, many live in the borough of Queens in New York City. Two areas, namely Astoria and Jamaica/Jamaica Hills, have large Greek populations.
