I would appreciate any member's opinion on this matter. I am on a dealer want list where they email me about material that they get that I am looking for. This time I am sent an email on a pricey item that is not on my want list. I email back saying that the item is not on my want list and ask if they may have mistaken it for something on my want list. Instead, they say that they know that it is not on my want list but did it because they thought I may be interested in it and they say sorry to have bothered me. Now I am the one feeling bad and I email an apology. I wish these things didn't happen, but I don't really think I started it.

Why are you apologizing to the dealer? He's the one who sent the email. It's not your fault that the dealer send you an email. Don't respond to the final email to the dealer.

There is no need to apologize to someone who seeks to "upsell" you. All good salespeople attempt it.

Jogil,

I'd be surprised if anybody here suggests an apology in in order.

If it happens again I'd let them know you're unsubscribing from their newsletters.

After reading all of the supportive postings on here, I feel that I may unsubscribe from the dealer's want list and never buy anything again from them. A customer should not be made to feel bad for an unsolicited email offering that they questioned.

An apology was probably not necessary, but if the dealer has offered attractive material on your want list in the past, I would suggest that you not unsubscribe at this point. You mentioned that they said they were sorry to have sent the unsolicited inquiry - let them know that they are not to send you communications about material not on your list going forward and, if they do not comply, then consider unsubscribing and let them know why. In the meantime, again assuming they have been helpful in filling your wants, you might continue to utilize this source of supply rather than summarily cutting it off.

In the end, however, it's your deal so you should go with whatever approach you are most comfortable with.

Yes I am on some dealers item wanted lists.

1. I only have them because they treat me the way I need to be from a dealer.

2. I choose to answer to an offer email or not!

3. I enjoy toying with the idea of buying something different. Again I choose to contact or not.

4. They have to cope with me putting in some low offers and if they do not take my offer no reply.

I guess I am pragmatic. I don't have to like everything a dealer does but so long as I get good service and decent prices I don't care if they do something like this once in awhile.
In your shoes, I'd choose to let it go, good dealers with decent service are getting fewer and further between these days. But it is ultimately your decision.
