I searched and could not find a topic on this in SCF. I am interested does anyone have good reccomendation for how to seal a small margin tear on a stamp? My interest is simply to shore it up to keep it from getting bigger. Not to defraud or hide.
I was thinking to take the gum off an old high quality peelable hinge (acid free), with a small brush, and reapply it across the tear. Not sure if that would work, of course I could practice, but it might be better than just putting a sliver of hinge over the area which I think would look bad.
Is there anything in reason that one can do that is better than just a band aide? I know there are professional services, what would they do that I cannot?
You'll need to research the repairing (infilling) of manuscript tears. Use of oriental paper properly matched to the target and prepared and then adhered with starch paste is the basic practice.
[edit: though for a small tear, perhaps there is a simpler approach]
why do you want to fix it if its that small, if I was trying to keep it for an album and didnt want it to tear more I would carefuly put it in a clear mount
It is about a 2 mm tear, and stamp value is pretty high so I would have peace of mind if it was sealed. Not just for my handling, but all future handlers as well.
Great question - I've been searching the site wondering if using hinges to keep older used blocks together intact would be acceptable. Similar to you, I'm not trying to hide any flaws, but some of the lower value stamps might not be worth saving in mounts.
