If you happen to be passing through Ulaanbaatar (or live there and work there) you could do worse than spend an hour in the Postage Stamps Museum. It's on the first floor of the main post office on Peace Avenue (not signposted, take the stairs on the right as you walk towards the main counter). They have a great display of Mongolian stamps and postal history dating from before Mongolian sovereignty to the modern day. You can buy many of the stamps at the desk on the ground floor, and the staff are helpful and speak English. They didn't allow me to take photos inside, sadly. You can also visit the site at www.mongolstamps.com, where you can buy on-line.

I'm probably not going that way this week, but you never know in the future.....

Great site, thanks for the link.....guys and gals - you need to to remove the 'dot' at the end of .com otherwise you will get a bad link.

I have a number of their amazing collection of 'space' stamps. 1959 was the first year of Mongolian 'space'. Perhaps a little off the topic but here's a link for Mongolian space cadets

Thx for pointing out the typo error. It auto-corrects in MS Word but not here. Sorry...

I usually spend all my time there in a Yurt drinking horse milk, but maybe next time I'll try something different.

I prefer the fermented camel's milk, especially when turned into vodka. Seems they don't have yurts over here. That's a Kazakh word. Here, it's called a ger. Same thing, though.

We have yurts in the Colorado backcountry. There are hut entities that will rent them out to people over the winter months.

I've just bumped into an expat dealer (Robin) at the museum who runs a site at www.ubstamps.com which also deals with more modern Mongolian stamps, covers, etc. The site's pretty basic and only goes back to 2002, but could be useful for thematic collectors. Worth a visit, and cheaper than travelling to Mongolia!
