Has anyone been to the National Postal Museum in DC? Maybe a foreign equivalent.

If so what did you think?

My wife and I visited the NPM briefly during the Washington 2006 event. I liked what I saw: the mail railcar and the store/gift shop. We were unable to view many exhibits. I did send myself a free postcard from their automated machine. One day we will go back and take more time to see what we missed.

My family and I have visited the National Postal Museum several times it is only about 90 minutes from our home. The classic US stamps on display are a must see. It gives me a chance to see stamps I will most likely never own. The history of the US postal system is well displayed. It is fun for both adults and children the way it is setup. Also it is very convient to visit if you are visiting DC, The museum is right across the street from Union station

Stamperdude the wife and I were also at Washington 2006..we were in D.C. for 3 days..my wife had never been to the Capitol so I had to combine sightseeing and 2 days of the big show....i heard that the tour of the Postal Museum was great.but we could just not fit it in...one of the hightlights of the trip was sitting on the Capitol lawn watching the Memorial Day show..Gary Sinese and all the patriotic stars ..was a great show !!

phil,
It was also my 1st time to DC, so we fit a lot of sightseeing in. One day I will post some pictures once I find them. We drove in from IL, I think it was over a 12 hour drive. In fact, we stayed in a motel in Fredricksburg the night we drove in. We were at the show at least 3 days and were within walking distance from our hotel.

Phil

There is a club in Springfield that meets weekly during the school year. Our problem here is it can take anywhere from 40 mins to 2 1/2 hours to go there during the week (DC traffic s the worst) Falls church may also have a club. it would be great to get one started here in Fredeicksburg to avoid all the traffic.

Next time you are goin thru Fredericksburg stop by we are adjacent to the Battlefield. We give free tours !!

Rick, same offer to you..if you are up this way..perhaps 8 hours from you..we have lots of Hudson river history here..West Point is not a walk thru like it was before 9-11 but I believe the museum is now considered off grounds...i have the Livingstons estates, Vanderbuilt mansion and FDR's family home all within a half hour !

rlorenz - a stamp club would be great.

philb - you should stop off next time.
theres a lot more to see than the battlefield. Old town, Belmont, Ferry Farm (boyhood home of George Washington), Kenmore plantation, Mary Washington house...

I am not sure where you are but I grew up in Westchester county. I remember going to West Point as a child and going through the museum. I loved the dioramas, we would go several times a year. Maybe that's where I get my love for history. Bear Mt was another place we always went for the zoo there , but I here it has really become crowded. I still love that area, we were in the Shrub Oak, Mahopac area
