I'm slowly building myself a complete collection of the mint Seebecks, trying to separate out the different printings and shades etc.

Some of these have gorgeous designs, are well engraved, colourful and cost very little. What's not to like?

Well, quite a bit if you're still hung over from Seebeck being the Bad Boy of philately but after over a hundred years I think I can forgive and forget.

For someone wanting to build up an inexpensive 19th century engraved collection I don't think you can go far wrong.

And if anyone has a pile of unwanted mint Seebecks they want taking off their hands, just let me know!

Good for you. I agree, they are attractive, and usually cost little.

I've touched a bit on the Seebecks here...

Honduras- Seebecks, Forgeries and Fakes- Oh My!

Bottom line- they are a "can of worms", but perhaps you can unravel them.

Just don't pay much, because, even though some have a high CV, very few dealers or collectors have done sufficient study to feel comfortable with the issues, and one might end up with cents on the dollar.

Have fun!

Great article! My main problem is buying them in quantity, despite the (presumed) high print runs. Most seem to still sit happily at the start of Central American collections and are too low value for dealers to separate out.

I'm sure there's a cache of them out there somewhere though...

To which you might add that we can admire Mr Seebeck's ingenuity.

We only know his name because he was the first.

Cheers,

Hi

Seebeck and Love are mutually exclusive words

I collect Ecuador and have a couple of stock cards full of Seebecks. I have to see what the APRL has for Seebeck. I know there is a book about them but the title escapes me right now.

They should be considered as well-engraved. Didn't he use the original plates from the printing company?

Getting into Seebeck issues has always been at least a passing interest, but never has gotten onto the "front burner." Still, I'm interested, jbcev80, in what you might dig up in way of reference books or other materials.

That is what makes separating Seebeck reprints from the actual stamps difficult.

Here is a "Linn's Stamp News" article:
http://www.linns.com/en/insights/st...lectors.html

I finally found the name of the book on this site: http://pbbooks.com/fake.htm

"Ecuador: The Philately of the Seebeck Era, January 1892 to Mid-June 1897, its Stamps, Proofs, POSTAL STATIONERY AND POSTAL HISTORY, By Robert A. D'Elia, FRPSL and Douglas B. Armitage, FRPSL Bill Welch, FRSPL, Editor"

The site looks pretty interesting with a wealth of information as to Fakes and Forgeries.

Please accept belated thanks for those links. I was traveling out-of-country during October and never got back to this topic.
