I am struggling with an early Mexico collection and bought an old 1979 Vackimes. There I learned that unused unoverprinted (sin sobreimpresion)stamps of the Maximilian issue are worthless. Now looking at Scott I see 13 c blue no overprint $2500. I guess I am misreading the catalogue but do not know in what way. Could some collector please help?

My (1984, not the current edition) Gibbons Central America lists remaindered, unoverprinted copies of the recess-printed (cf. lithographed) issue of October 1866-April 1867. CV for the 13c then was £1.50. Is Scott referring to an unoverprinted copy of the lithographed issue (which is not listed as unoverprinted in Gibbons)?

Thanks for your response, Geoff. You mention litho from which I suspect there may have been a later issue in engraved. I shall get back to the library and reread Scott. It was very kind of you to respond. I shall update my posting tomorrow Monday
Best wishes

The litho issue is dated 1 August-December 1866; the recess, Oct 1866-April 1867, not long before Maimilian's fall.

Michael: if you have an interest in Mexican stamps, you may want to visit www.mepsi.org , the web site of the Mexico-Elmhurst Philatelic Society International. MEPSI is the main society in North America for collectors of Mexico.

If you were to get into the classic stamps of Mexico; prior to 1910; you'll need a copy of the Follansbee catalog. Nick F.'s catalog is far more comprehensive than are either Scott or Gibbons.

Gentlemen, you have introduced me to a whole new world of early Mexico. So many thanks.
I see the Maimilian issue was reissued, engraved, with square periods instead or round ones and that the unoverprinted ones, as expected, of no value.I always felt sorry for Carlotta, Max'' wife. She was a Belgian princess married off to her cousin, Max, who was promoted, figureheaded, dumped as emperor of a conquered land. She died in 1922, back in her home country
A great site and nice people
