This weekend was CUPEX, my local annual show. Gorgeous autumn weather, bright and sunny with temperatures in the 60s and 70s.
While many of the dealers lamented that buying traffic was somewhat disappointing, the same dealers expressed pleasure in being able to do a lot of buying/trading. I sold a few high-end French stamps to a dealer there to raise money for CHICAGOPEX next month.
I always send out my wantlist to the dealers about a month before the show, just in case some might bring something they might not have ordinarily brought. This year it worked out wonderfully, as one of the dealers is working on completing his U.S. revenue collection and had specific wants, some of which I could provide. He also wanted some revenues on documents to play with over the winter, so I put together a box lot for him. I traded these to him for his existing revenue stock (nothing spectacular, but about $12K SCV of new material for me to search through). When I factor in what I paid for the material I traded him, I'm into the new material at less than 5% of Scott. That's a win.
This same dealer was blowing out his 102 card boxes of world inventory at 5-10% of Scott (he recently had a heart attack and is downsizing). If I had deeper pockets I would have bought more; even with faults factored in, it's hard to go wrong at that level. As it was, I purchased about $2,500 SCV in Sweden and $10,500 SCV of Switzerland to play with.
One of the national dealers I work with showed up unexpectedly today, sharing a table with another dealer. He had all new material, so I purchased some nice revenue documents I hadn't expected to.
I cherrypicked a moderately tough "right frameline double" revenue for almost nothing, which is always a nice feel.
In the non-revenue area, I picked up an interesting U.S. advertising cover, some classic France items for my world cancel collection, and an early French multiple at a crazy low price.
Lastly, I bought a British item that is clearly bogus, a simulated parcel front. The stamps are fake and the markings are likely fake, but it aesthetically is very interesting; great eye appeal. I showed it to a few dealers, all loved it, several wanted to buy it, but no one could tell me any information about it. One dealer speculated that it is a Sperati piece.
Images to come... boy am I tired!
