Nice Admiral Stamp Auction Buy.

Hi guys...Picked this up at a stamp auction today..1915 Admiral stamps with NO printed front and a letter accompanying it...Never heard of these before..The picture is the front of the stamps and the back has undisturbed original gum..

What do you guys think..?

Ya gotta love Bileski - he knew the business and delivered product that collectors across Canada and around the world loved. I've sold quite a few of his lots - all of course with his little notes of explanation. As for your item - certainly unusual and collectible - but I'm going to say it's printing ephemera rather than philatelic - but that's just my 2 cents.

Great stuff Robert, and congratulations on this! The closest I come to this type of thing is a couple of strips of the 23 cent Lunch Wagon, US Scott no 2464. Several years ago a full roll of these coil stamps was found that had no stamps in it, just the top of the web that showed only the electric eye marks. I have two strips of three in my collection, one strip is perforated and one is imperforated!

It most likely has to do with a test run of the American Bank Note Company perforator with US patent # 1,120,753 of 1914 See: http://www.google.com/patents/US1120753 Let's just say that I just bought some of these on ebay due to this new possibility which is being reported here and elsewhere. One way to look at these blank perforated stamps is to compare how the condition of the perforations are. They do look to be in better condition (newer) than the ones found on some older Admiral stamps.

Yes, the perforations are in pretty good shape jogil... I know some people come on here and scuff at this post..But I just collect for pleasure and try to ignore negative comments.

What some forget is that after the U.S. Bureau of Engraving and Printing (BEP) took over stamp printing and perforating from the American Bank Note Company (ABNC) in 1894, the printing and perforating of Canadian stamps became one of ABNC's biggest accounts including later through their subsidiary the Canadian Bank Note Company (CBNC). The newer condition of the perforations seems to perhaps indicate a new perforating machine trial run. The sheets were gummed in order to see how the perforating punches could penetrate gummed paper which is slightly thicker than ungummed paper.

There is the story that two sheets stuck together because they were wetted in wet printing so that one side got printed on first and the other side got gummed after. However, the sheets would have been dried after printing and before gumming. Also, after gumming, the sheets would also have been dried before perforating. The perforator would have to have perforated two sheets at the same time instead of one sheet which would have caused some perforation clogging problems. The sheets would have then also been cut into four panes. If the panes would have reached the post office still stuck together, then not only would there be unprinted, gummed and perforated panes, but also corresponding printed ungummed and perforated panes too.
