I am very sad to note the passing of an outstanding man and great philatelist, William 'Bill' Weiss. As noted on his web site, "Bill is a 48-year APS member, joining in 1966. He is a well-known exhibitor, having successfully exhibited numerous specialized collections and is the author of the books ; The Foreign Mail Cancellations of New York City, 1870-1878, The United States 15c Stamp of 1870-1890, The Catalog of Union Civil War Patriotic Covers, Confederate States General Issue Stamps Used on Adversity Covers, 1861-1865 and Collecting United States Covers and Postal History. He has also authored numerous articles in various philatelic publications and was an A.P.S. Summer Seminar instructor."
I considered Bill a close friend, he was always quick to supply knowledge and experience without expecting anything in return. He was truly a generous gentlemen. He and I battled cancer together; we shared our experiences including many medical trials and tribulations. Tragically, Bill also had to endure the loss of his loving wife a few months before he past. Addie was married to Bill for over 50 years and her loss impacted him greatly, the final months of his life were more stressful than any one person should have to deal with. Bill did not want to share his pain with the community and choose to keep his prognosis to himself. But even towards the end, Bill kept his spirit up and his love for the hobby remained. I, like his family, many friends and customers, admired him and he will be greatly missed. Don

Don, this is devastating news. Everything else pales in comparison. Yes, he was feisty at times, but his love of all things philatelic never wavered and our stamp community was greatly enriched thanks to all his contributions. May he truly rest in peace. Please give my condolences to his family. |

Bill entered into retirement just as I was coming on board to the forum. I found out very quickly that he had earned for himself an exemplar reputation and I was--may I say it?--genuinely thrilled whenever he would post here. Long may his example guide us. Long may he live in our memories. |

One of the great figures in late 20th and early 21st century philately here in the USA. His passing will definitely create a void in the philatelic scene that will be difficult to fill. RIP Mr Weiss. |
