I understand that Patchogue, NY had these precencels:
#899 Industry 1 cent 1940
#804 1c George Washington
#805 1.5c Martha Washington

I understand there is a 4th stamp available... What might that be? Thank you. It is for my LIRR train stamp webpage:

Great stuff. I assume you're from the Island? I grew up in Queens

My uncle played bridge on the train returning from work in the city! (Me, I would have looked for the club car...)

The 4th bureau print is Scott# 632. There are also 5 other common local types - probably many other denominations on those, I don't have my NY General catalog handy.

"...The 4th bureau print is Scott# 632. There are also 5 other common local types..."

Thus Scott 632 is a Patchogue precancel? The other local types indicate other Long Island towns, varieties, or? Thank you. A new area for me after 50 years. Islip, NY house in Patchogue, now in Tampa *** Edited by Staff - Please Review the rules that you agreed to when you registered. ***

There is a SC 632 with a Patchoque precancel similar to the one you picture - this is the 4th one. There are also 5 other dissimilar Patchoque precancel styles on a number of other denominations - almost a hundred in all. Many other Long Island [and Tampa] precancels exist. [ I can see how things can get confused I was not referring to the 4th Bureau stamp series, the 1922's ]

Perhaps pictures will help, the 4 items from the previous PSS Bureau print catalog - these were applied in Washington DC when the stamps were printed. Prices are only higher now. Precancel type 61 is similar to 71 but lines wider apart.

These are the five non-bureau types, applied locally in Patchoque. Denomination list is from the NY General catalog first edition [Leahy]. There was a second edition so more denominations may be known.

Please explain the non-bureau types, applied locally in Patchoque.

My previous understanding was 4 type stamps used as precancels. The non-bureaus are Scott listed?

I'm looking to display/collect them as part of my Long Island Railroad/stamp usage material: http://www.trainsarefun.com/trainsa...ndstamps.htm as utilized for railroad RPO franking.

Thank you.

There are 7 types [called styles] of Patchoque precancels, PSS numbers 61,71,255,482,704,734, and 841. They all look a little different. 61 & 71 are 'bureaus' applied in Washington DC during the process of printing the underlying stamps. The other 5 were applied in Patchoque. Only the 61 & 71 would be included in Scott's summary counts. Your previous understanding was incomplete. All of the denominations I listed above exist. The PSS catalog prices look low, but just try to find them! Many other towns served by the LIRR have precancels. They would make a great topic. Precancels are fun and inexpensive - but take a lot of hunting. Typically, letters with precancels do not show up with additional cancels [like RPO markings] but sometimes do.

Chasa: Thank you very much for the in-depth information, PSS numbers and Catalog page illustration. This is an entire new area for me and you have clarified it very nicely. Best, Steve :-)

P.S. How to go about searching for these; besides ebay? Are there dealers for this material as I just need the Patchogue set?
