I'm wondering if anyone know what kind of cancel this is. I'm assuming the place name is RASTATT, but after that it looks like Nr. 2, which I've never seen on a German stamp before. However, so far as I can see it's not listed in the StampsX.com postmark database and there's no mention of it on the net, so I'm curious. Does anyone know what it means?

The Ortsverzeichnis I of 1944 (official listing of post offices) shows 2 post offices for Rastatt. Rastatt 2 shows an address of Bahnhofstrasse, which is the street running in front of the main railroad station. In old Germany, it is very common for the "1" post office to be for the old downtown area, and for the "2" post office to be for the p.o. near the train station.

Thanks for the information, bookbndrbob!

I'm wondering how on earth you came by the Ortsverzeichnis for 1944!

It's probably Cannstatt Nr. 2.

Nope, definitely not Cannstatt, Baden. There is only one post office listed for this town.

Thanks for the suggestion, PostmasterGS. There could be room for the letters!

bookbndrbob, it's always possible that the Cannstadt Nr. 2 office was not open by 1944. The cancel date is 1922, so a lot can happen in 22 years!

If you click on the link in my previous post you'll see that there was most definitely a Cannstatt Nr. 2.

PostmasterGS, thanks for the link. Found the "Cannstatt 2" cancels after several searches.

Now I am baffled that the post office is listed in neither the alphabetical listing nor the listing of towns with more that one post office at the back of the volume. Jimjamtwo must be right...they closed this post office before 1944.

Cannstatt Nr. 2 also seems to be the only postmark of that kind listed in the StampsX.com database. If there was a Rastatt Nr. 2 I haven't been able to find any confirmation online.

That's the place I initially assumed it to be, PoStat4evR, but an example of the Canstatt Nr. 2 cancel is available online and it appears to be identical to the one on my stamp.

One thought comes to mind. The Cannstatt 2 post office could have been destroyed by allied bombing. After all, it was in the proximity of the train station and rail line.

I believe Cannstatt 2 and 3 both ceased operations somewhere around 1924.

It is Rastatt- traces of the "A" before "S"

It does look more like the right side of an "A" as opposed to an "N". There was a Rastatt Nr. 2. Though there's not a record in the database of a cancel matching that design, the database isn't 100% complete.

I support PostmasterGS's original answer of Cannstatt. The cancel clearly matches the Cannstatt postmark which appears on the revalued block on the link he provided in his first post. Also, please note to partial cancel at the top of the scan which shows the tips is 3 letters which fit "CAN", but do not fit an interpretation as Rastatt.
