At a time of hyper-inflation !

Germany, 1923 issue, 20,000 on 20. Minimum catalogue value.

Lovely set though when laid out on an album page...superb even.

That stamp is from the inflation time (1923). It's postal value was 20,000 Mark! (Overprint says "20 Tausend" - "20 Thousand").

These stamps are very common in unused condition. If you find them used on cover, they can become really valuable, because of the high inflation, some of these stamps were only valid a few days.

Thanks for the lesson guys and thanks for posting this habbyboo.

I have quite a few of these Inflation Stamps I didn't know the history behind them. Gee now I want to work on my German collection. Too many stamps not enough time. This is my first day off in 3 weeks and I have to prune 150 rosebushed (OUCH!!)

The inflation in Germany in 1923 was really terrible. If I am not mistaken, the highest denomination postage stamp that year was 50 BILLION Marks!! Below are pics showing the 1 billion through 50 billion Marks.

If I remember right, many (if not most) of the off-cover used stamps in this series have been extensively faked. One should be careful when buying the more expensive items.

Here is one link related to the hyper-inflation era: http://www.hobbizine.com/page0014.html

We have a number of German immigrants in our stamp club that were raised in the shadow of that time and they talk about just how crazy living conditions were during that time asw pointed out in the link the swabbie provided. I liken it to the profound effect that the Depression had on some of our parents and grandparents. The frugal habits that see as foolish nowadays when evrything is readily available and hoarding is unnecessary.

laswabbie is correct. With a huge supply of mint stamps available, and a bunch of stolen postal cancellers, pretty good forgeries abound.
