This thread has turned into a fascinating history lesson.

Thanks to all of you for your offers of support and good advice. (Satan? Really? He collects stamps?)

- Good one Jenny!
This reference thing is simply annoying. What are their reasoning for such a requirement - afraid of some undercover agent that actually collects coins and want to infiltrate their stamping activities?
In that respect your nickname "KGB" is brilliant

Probably more afraid of ignorant thieves, who think that stamp collections are worth stealing.

Yes - many groups publish membership lists that could be used to target affluent households. I believe that there was an incident back in the 70s(?) where someone used an APS(?) membership directory to target homes to rob. Probably quaint to think that anyone would go through that much trouble today. Today they just need to look on facebook for the people posting vacation pictures and telling the world that they are in Europe on vacation for the next two weeks (leaving an empty house).

Our club takes the application, advises the membership in the next monthly meeting and in the following newsletter. At the following meeting, if there are no objections to the application, the applicant becomes a member. No references required.

"No organization will risk the threat of a lawsuit."

I don't know. The APS has expelled some members, staring in its journal that the guy is a deadbeat.
