I'd like to become a member of one or two stamp organizations and am puzzled by the request for references. I have no real standing in the stamp community and am a complete amateur collector. Might someone explain what is needed in this regard?

Most of these groups will waive that if you are an APS member, although I've seen a few that don't. Like so much else in organized philately, some groups seem stuck in a time warp- I've seen some application forms asking for philatelic AND commercial references, such as 'department stores.' (!) Some application forms look to have been designed 30 or so years ago.
I would email them and be upfront, explain your situation and ask what they suggest. Be sure they understand you respecttheir reasons for this. You might get some leeway. |

Thanks much!
I only shop at Cartier, but have been photographed at the Dollar Store. Sounds like my chances of joining are slim to none. (Wink.) |

I would also consider any stamp dealer that you have had dealings with. |

..."puzzled by the request for references" When I joined a couple of philatelic clubs they asked for a referee and they meant anyone of good standing in the community such as a church minister, schoolmaster, employer etc. That was to show them you were a decent sort of bloke. A stamp organization might have different criteria to a philatelic club but at least you could ask what sort of referee is required. |

Tell them you have over 1100 postings on this chat room and never kicked off and have answered many dozens of posters who had questions . |

Quote: what if they read all my dumb jokes?! Say they were mine. They'll believe it. -IBFS btw-- Seriously, if it helps, I would be glad to give you a reference like "upstanding member of SCF..." or something to that effect, if it helps. |

When I returned, so to speak, I bought supplies - and shamelessly listed Subway & BCW as references for the first club. |

I hate those snooty people who require a reference to join a club. In my opinion, it's a BAD hold over from a bygone error. Give SATAN as your reference -- tell them if they don't like it, to return your check and you'll spend your time and money elsewhere. If you do, I'll bet a month's pay, they cash the check and welcome you with open arms. Kirk |

In many cases the requirement for references is in the bylaws of the club. Yes, it is probably a hold-over from 30 or more years ago, but if it requires a vote of the entire membership (rather than just the board) to modify the bylaws it can be enough of a pain that it is easier to leave it be. In most cases an e-mail to the membership person will generate a solution. If you list the name of the club, there may be members reading this board that would agree to serve as your reference. |

Send your money. No organization will turn you down. If your check clears - your a member. It's a ruse to keep "bad eggs" away. Today, no organization will risk the threat of a open lawsuit.

Sometimes "references" mean a club sponsor is desired for the new membership. The club often have contest for who recruits the most new members. Typically there is a "default" sponsor if no on steps up. |
