Any guidance on identification of paper makers by watermark and or paper source. We all know USPS watermarks are well documented for stamps in the scott catalogue, and currency can be known by government issue.
However, I am seeking reference for a postal card wrapper made presumably in Chicago for the 1893 Columbian Worlds Fair Goldsmith Postal cards. The wrapper has on it a watermark and I am curious is it possible to identify the paper maker by the watermark. I would think there might be all sorts of watermarked paper ephemera that may have already been researched and documented.
There have been occasional articles in older philatelic journals but no really useful compendium for all watermarks/paper makers. Perhaps something in the historical document field as watermarks might be useful for determining the age of a document.
I did find something useful at the Smithsonian Institution Archives and there are several useful links in the comments in case anyone wishes to start researching.
