Can anyone tell me anything about these cypher labels? This says 1706 in pencil on the back, Note says rare Queen Anne cypher label. I'd like to know a little more about these. Are these valuable?

I believe that's called an escutcheon, duncan. It is the back part of one of those blue revenue stamps affixed to documents way back when. I have some pictures somewhere, I'll try to dig some out.

Here it is. This is from a 3 page document dated about 1843. Each page has one of these.

I don't know if they're really valuable on their own. I tried to sell my documents recently at an old paper show (indenture, dower and a real estate piece, which are all tied together) but could not interest anyone. I think a Queen Anne document would have garnered more interest, Victoria just doesn't cut it anymore.

Unfortunately you only appear to have the back piece, so I couldn't tell you what a value would be.

Tnanks for the help I see mine has the number 20 on it so 1706 is this going to be correct? Someone must have pulled this off a document for some reason. I don't know if there are collectors for these.

The embossed stamp (blue) was attached to the document, by way of a small metal band.
The band was joined at the rear and covered by a seal, of which you have one.

Being only a seal, I doubt if there is much value there, but that is a guess.
I have seen boxes of escutcheon seals go for $60 at auction.

I collect them.

I might start it at $9.99 tomorrow and see if anyone takes it, so I should call it an escutcheon seal not label?

duncan I'd say yes, call it that, but you may need a little description as to what it is. Good luck.
