I am trying to decide what to do with about 80 of these covers from all over the world, all addressed to Hercules Motors during WW II, if there is any interest, or any value, as singles or small lots. First one might not even be air mail, but was free. I am posting some of the more interesting ones first.

I'd keep them all together if you could. Would make a nice study or exhibit about either the company or airmails from around the world in a specific time period. Just my 2¢ |

Why free and no stamps on the first one, they have O.H.M.S. stamps for that purpose, they print the O.H.M.S. directly on the envelope I don't think it will make it a stationary, or else they will be unitrade # for that or I miss it ( in case someone don't know it's means On His Majesty's Service ) look here a similar but with a stamp |

As you can see some were handled very roughly, while others are still in very fine condition. Fun to look at, and study about, enjoy. |

If you have the time and patience to post these individually on ebay, I think that you may be pleasantly surprised at what they return. They have many things going for them - censor stamps and seals, auxiliary markings, legible dates, cachets, advertising. If you bulk lot the covers you'll be rid of them and someone else will sell them off one-by-one, or assemble a rather tight, esoteric collection/exhibit. |

The image in the above link from your initial post is interesting to me as a collector of aircraft and aviation-related themes on covers. The aircraft depicted is a reasonable rendering of a Boeing 247 considered by some as the first modern airliner and not as frequently seen in cachets as say the Ford Tri-Motors or DC-2 and DC-3. Also of interest is the depiction of the airport in the cachet. It could be described as a transition from the concept of an "airfield" which was a circular area with unmarked marked runways that allowed airplanes to always land into the wind, to the more contemporary concept of an "airport" with defined runways that generally followed directions or headings of prevailing winds. The cachet depicts an airport with defined runways, but still allows three options for takeoff and landing. High costs of maintaining hard surface runways have caused contemporary airports to limit the number of runways. Most smaller municipal airports now maintain only one runway. The transition from airfields to airports occurred rapidly in the 1930s as air travel became faster, more comfortable, safer, and more affordable to the general public. Don |

They are a mix of US and worldwide.
A number of then have serious condition issues that will keep their value down and while a couple such as the Malta one might be worth listing individually and you might try that on your first auction attempt at selling them, you might wind up needing to group most of them into a lot and sell them as worldwide censored covers.
As for the Canadian OHMS ones the first one without the stamp was sent by surface mail and the second one with the airmail stamp was sent by airmail. OHMS free mailing was by surface mail and to get the airmail the sending office needed to add the postage for that extra cost service. |
