Robert, I can not tell you anything about that spot in the corner. But that writing is not really so weird. Some time ago there was a thread about that; at some time in the past folks used to do this to make a piece of paper ( or a postcard ) go further!
The "cross writing" was done in locales where writing materials were scarce, or, perhaps, in this case, where the writer hadn't said all he/she wanted to say and needed more space. Some of the examples of this writing style that I have seen were done in the South during the Civil War in the U.S..
