OG's original post showed the first PA set inscribed in Mils, the currency on the Mandate stamps. Israel objected to this and so the remaining stock was overprinted 'Fils' [Jordanian currency] in English and Arabic and black bars to cancel the 'Mils' inscription. Here is an example of the Flag part of the set.... |

The following trio are unlisted in Scotts but listed though unpriced in Gibbons.[Gibbons explanation lacks clarity!]. Pairs of the original 10 Mils stamp locally overprinted by the Postmaster in Jericho in English and Arabic. Handstamped in small round in Red, Black or Violet. The first set exists in all three colours. Note the error on the red overprint pair |

Even more scarce than the stamps in my previous post are these Official stamps with the local overprint. These were not overprinted officially but were overprinted by that enterprising Postmaster from Jericho ! Below is an Official set with Violet overprint. I have an example on cover somewhere if I can find it !! |

Please excuse my ignorance, but I'm assuming the only reason the PA released issues covering Christian concepts was for the revenue. Is that correct?
P.S. I've also been to Bethlehem and Jericho and other tourist destinations in Israel. Philately and religion aside, it's a trip everyone should make at least once - just for the history and beauty. |

Laswabbie, Let us not forget the 100,000 or more Christian Arabs that reside in the West Bank[Palestinian Authority controlled ares]. Many with their Muslim neighbours but also in Christian communities, of which Bethlehem is one of the biggest. There are more than 100,000 Christians Arabs in Israel too and many more in Syria,Jordan and Lebanon.
I have no doubt too that the Christian flavour of the Christmas Stamps has a lot to do with Bethlehem itself and a little to do with making some money from collectors and tourists.
More to come from the PA.

Here is the last of the 'Mils' items followed by the overprinted version. It is also the only M/S that was inscribed in Mils and overprinted. But in this strange part of the world, one cannot help but notice the oddities. First, the Palestinian Authority issued a stamp [sheet] with an Israel Flag and the Israel PM. I was a bit surprised when this was first issued. But then Israel demand the overprint which the PA accepts. Then they add to the overprint, further text about the awarding of the Nobel peace prize to Arafat,Rabin and Peres. Israel came out pretty good on this issue. But the plot thickens later........... In the meantime, here are the sheets. Londonbus1.....Don't you just love Bill ? |
