Something different and unusual?
Maybe.
This could be the only PA Fiscal issue.
Printed in Ramallah in Strip sheets of 10 with Margins all round.
A nice design, Dove of peace holding up the Dome of the Rock....very symbolic.
For use by the Ministry of Interior and I am of the opinion that this was planned for a number of uses and charges as the '500 fils' and 'income' are both overprints, as is the long number which was the same on each stamp of the sheet. The inscribed number to the right numbered 1-10 from top to bottom. At first I thought I had a seperated pair but what I have are stamps from consecutive sheets.

You can see from these two examples that they have a small perforator problem with two of the pins !
If anyone else comes up with any more info on these I would love to hear about it.

Below is a full sheet example. You can see the perforations only go to the edges at the bottom. There is a small pinhole at the top which would have held the sheets together somehow.

Next time......Yasser's Propaganda stamps !

Londonbus1.....Fiscally uninformed

YASSER'S PROPAGANDA STAMPS

The following stamp was issued in 1927, long before the Palestinian Authority was even a twinkle in Mr Arafat's eyes.....a 5 mil Orange showing the citadel in Jerusalem, issued by the British during the Mandate period [1923-1948].

Go forward in time to 1995, a new PA stamp showing the same 1927 issue.......a little surprising that this issue did not suffer the same fate as the first PA issues. Maybe someone turned a 'Blind eye' ?

The above stamp was part of a set of three, all showing different 'Palestine' stamps from the Mandate period.

However, somewhere in between [so it is believed] we have something much more interesting.

The above block formed part of a set of 17 mandate forgeries, all with propaganda overprints, each one different thus collected in blocks.
Rumour had it that these were ordered by Yasser Arafat himself, possibly after the Mils-Fils fiasco. They were printed in Ramallah, are slightly larger than their more illustrious originals but excellent in detail.
Below you can compare better the individual stamps and see the overprints.
Later, another rumour spread that these were printed in Israel to embarrass the Palestinian Authority. Given the the relatively kind wording of the overprint, it is quite possibly true.
But somehow I doubt it.
More a softening of Mr Arafat's views on the political turmoils of the day !

I like this set very much. It cost an arm and a leg but I had to have them. I have no info on number of sets printed, but I have seen only one other, at an auction, where the starting price was double what I paid !
I would like to believe the story that they were printed on the orders of Arafat and that he and a secret 'team' devised the overprints. It fits in perfectly with the events of the time.

I would like to hear others views on the looks of the forgery compared to the Mandate stamp. I think it is excellent....for a propaganda use !

Londonbus1.......The secret is sadly in the grave.

Edit: Not quite sure how the block and individual stamps came out the same size !! I will leave them anyway....the wonders [or not] of modern technology !

Interesting. I wasn't even aware that these existed.

They are excellent reprints -- in fact, until I read further, I was wondering where they found enough stocks of the original issue to overprint in this way, they're that good. As most know, stamp designs that are reprinted for a propaganda use are usually done very quickly with the end result being somewhat coarse (the "Futches Reich" stamps come to mind here as well as the Nazi version of the GB Silver Jubilee stamp picturing Stalin and the Edward VIII definitive), but these look so close to the originals, I imagine questions were raised when they first came to light.

Totally interesting, Londonbus1.

I'm back. I've been living out of a suitcase for the last two months. The exciting version is the wrecking ball took my home. The boring version is I had to move and it took awhile to get back online. I do hope you continue to run with this as I've already shown whatever I have. Your posts really helped make this country/state/entity/whatever even more interesting and I appreciate all of them for sure.

p.s. I'd really like to see a cover - please
OG

Palestinian Authority have "good start" in policy regarding postage stamps, with good design and printing quality, but slowly they change.
Most problems come when they split politically, and PA on one side and Gaza City on other side.

Gaza, even have own postage stamps, not described by name of Palestinian Authority, and face value, from beginning named MILLS than changed to FILLS (no one is NOT Jordanian currency, as someone stated here! Jordan currency is DINAR), which is non-exist currency in practice, it is used just in administration term.

One interesting issue come to me, as design was still good, and it is regarding issue for "First Election" from 1996 year, where artist show us Palestinian people, but without eyes!

Sown, Scott #48)

Milco,

Fills is indeed Jordanian. One Jordanian Dinar is divided to 100 Kirsh and to 1000 Fills. Here is a stamp from 1995, same period of the first PA stamps, with Fills:

"...and so the remaining stock was overprinted 'Fils' [Jordanian currency] in English and Arabic and black bars to cancel the 'Mils' inscription..."

LaoPhil .... I just say, that in Jordan, currency is DINAR and part of this DINAR is Fils, and in Palestinian Autonomy it go from Mills to Fills changed name of currency, which is NON-exist in realty.

(Shown: "Old City" issue from 1997 year, Gaza and Hebron, Scott catalog number 66-67, currency on stamp is Fills)
