Hello all, I have quite a few Russians & it's an area I like a lot. I would like to run this thread for a while when time allows me to if you don't mind, & if you have an interest in me doing that. I have a couple to start it off with that might be of interest. The first ones I won't even type the 'I' word (it seems to start riots else where on the web), but would like to know if I have learnt this correctly from you all, yes or no will do nicely thanks, & any other input is welcome too, been a lot of hours trying to get my eye in These are all vertically laided. Thanks for looking. All the best.....Jad

Jad, were you asking something specific? (Yeah, I know, I'm not that bright.)
Incidentally, the stamps with overprints in your first post might best be called Russian in the Turkish Empire. I think Levant narrows it down too far.) |

KGB,......... I was a bit criptic with the first ones,.... as a newbie almost unwilling to say the words 'inverted groundwork' out loud, because of what I've seen else where on the web when people do ATB...Jad |

Welcome, Jad! http://www.europe-stamps.com/russia...ffice-stamps ... Russia operated post offices in parts of the Turkish Empire for several decades, issuing stamps expressly for this purpose from 1863 until 1921. Some early examples of these stamps have the inscription #1056;#1054;#1055;#1080;#1058; for the #1056;#1091;#1089;#1089;#1082;#1086;#1077; #1054;#1073;#1097;#1077;#1089;#1090;#1074;#1086; #1055;#1072;#1088;#1086;#1093;#1086;#1076;#1089;#1090;#1074;#1072; #1080; #1058;#1086;#1088;#1075;#1086;#1074;#1083;#1080;, or Russian Steam Navigation and Trading Company. Many others were Russian stamps with printed surcharges in para and piastres. Most of these were surcharged in English, though a small number of later ones were in the Cyrillic alphabet and featured further overprints. Finally, there were several stamps with overprints of local city and town names - Constantinople, Jerusalem, et cetera. The number of stamps used by Russia for its post offices around the Ottoman Empire is large, and with all the surcharges and overprints, the variety seems endless. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Russi...toman_Empire ... Hi all. ikeyPikey, many thanks for saving me time finding all that information, I spent a couple of evenings in the links & they answered questions I hadn't even asked about yet That doesn't mean I've run out though, these for instance. Not sure how these two fit in, but I liked the shifts of the groundwork on them. Later....Jad |

KGB....the 2010 cat.(s) are here & I should have said in my second post that they are horizontally laid. It turns out the first post 10k is Sc #60a, my eye is in & the second photo of three are all Sc 33a, not high CV by any means so I guess they're not as scarce as some I thought, as I'm able to I would put on some side by sides for everyone, the stamp on the left of your screen, (looking at it) is the "a" stamps & the second in each photo(on the right) is the normal direction of groundwork stamp for this series.(This also applies to the red 4K as well I think.) Thanks again for your help & interest. Later.....Jad |

The 2K stamp is Scott 26 if it is horizontal paper. The 2K stamp wasn't issues until 1875 and after that the background changes. The vertical laid paper issue is a rare stamp. |

Thank you for your reply & input Dekka37....at the time I posted I didn't have a cat. but I see it now. I saved this from some-where on the web, & can't remember where to give credit to them, but would you or anyone know if these variations apply to the horizonal laid stamp or only the vertical laid ? I would like to get a book with this sort of expanded information in english if I can, the Scotts I've just scored is very limited in the Russia area. I'm finding the russian stamps really interesting & have a few hundred to sort through yet. I'll post up another stamp that is different to the other 10 of his kind I have, as soon as I get a bit more spare time ;) All the best for now....Jad |

I just recently started paying more attention to my Russia collection. It is very interesting. This is the catalog that I find the most helpful. It is in English and Russian. Best wishes with your collecting. |
