This is one of my favorite stamps, it is a ratty stamp with the straight edge and crease at the bottom, but look at the cancellations. The circular GRAIG son is not listed in Dikes Catalog of New Mexico Cancellations. If you haven't noticed yet, the killer cancellation is an Indian Head! The only city in New Mexico to have the Indian Head cancellation, according to Dike, is Cranes, New Mexico and the earliest known usage of that cancellation was after the year date of this stamp-6 Mar, 1885. I feel pretty safe to say this is a discovery copy of this GRAIG cancellation as well as the Indian Head cancellation was used at CRAIG. Do you believe that is a safe assumption?

Perhaps Fort Craig ? New Mexico didn't become a state until 1912 so it's probably New Mexico territory, not sure if it was referred to as W. Mexico but the only other Fort Craig postmark I've seen had the full Fort Craig in the postmark.

Craig, Socorro Co., New Mexico operated from 1880 to 1885.

Don't feel bad not seeing the Indian head cancel I didn't realize it for years. The Indian head cancel is a side view facing to the left straight edge of the stamp. Under the "C" of "CRAIG" you will see the nose then lips then chin. The neck of the Indian covers up the "N" of "NEW MEXICO". The Indians hair plumes goes through the SON cancel to the right. It makes since that there be a town outside next or real close to a Fort of this size-its safer and it's where the money is. Fort Craig was deactivated in 1885.

Didn't see the e until you mentioned it. I see what the OP is referring to with the "Indian Head". Also the date slug is inverted.
