As a newbie/novice collector I'm keen to understand the importance of perforations. I am finding several stamps that are not 'centered' within the perforations, as in the attached example. In a basic amateur collection, is it more desirable to keep the stamp on the right because of the perforation issue, or is it of no consequence?

Thanks in advance.

Unless the perforations are really badly out of alignment as in freak perforations as a variety, the most better centered stamp is generally the most desirable as long as everything else is in good condition.

You mean the stamp on the left, don't you?

Of the two stamps, I prefer the left even though it looks a bit roughed up at the lower right corner. If you were judging an expensive stamp, I suspect a lot of people would prefer excellent perfs over centered image.

The old girl's corgi must have been at the one on the left - I'd put that in the charity shop box, personally.

Clearly, you should keep them both ... one of the advantages of stock books, eh?

In general, as a beginner, I've been favouring those stamps that are best centered and least spoiled by postmarks but I'd hate to discard a more valuable stamp just because my OCD tells me it isn't lined up properly. Your replies suggest there's nothing special about an off-centre stamp in the main and therefore I'll base decisions more on the overall condition. Thank you all very much.

JWJ, at the higher end, centering is very important for many collectors, but that`s when you`re dealing with very fine stamps.

Incidentally, sometimes a postmark makes a stamp much more valuable and, regardless, many people enjoy collecting postmarks.

That's very interesting KGB, thank you. Although I'm generally trying to pick the stamps with least amount of postmark visible, I do tend to keep ones that have a visible date. Sadly, that's not many.

With centering, it really depends on the issue as to how picky I am. Same goes with perforations. There are are some stamps which have notoriously bad perfs, usually because of the paper quality. Stamps which are perforated gauges 10 1/2 and lower tend to have some short perfs.
