Forgive me if this is a common occurrence but it's something I haven't seen before. I've just come across the top of an envelope that has postmarked Australian stamps (Mount Hawthorn 16 Dec 1969) on one side and a very clear UK postmark (Ledbury, Hertfordshire 5 Jan 1970). Is this unusual and what is the most likely explanation?

The UK postmark is a receiving postmark applied in the UK when a item is received. If you subtract the British postmark date from the Australian postmark date you can determine how long it took the item to make its transit.

Ah! Shows how much (little) I know. I didn't realise some mail was postmarked on receipt. Thanks for the explanation.

Arrival (and transit) postmarks become common as you move back in time, but are relatively rare today.

No, that does not make them pricey
