Is what I have here either SG54 or 55? I see a few on ebay UK using both cat numbers but the ebay listed embossed all look the same to me. Some seem to be a fair price at over 200 pounds. I am just wondering which 1/- green embossed I have here. Any thoughts as to the correct SG catalog number and value?
Can anyone see the silk threads in the one shilling stamp? I cannot see any traces and they should be reasonably visible.. at least in the stamps I've looked at.
It would appear that the recipient John Bottomly got all his mail with cut to shape stamps... here is another one addressed to him (this time with clearly defined threads). The value of the cover (two or three hundred pounds) below is not the stamp but in the "24" which dates it several years before the one posted by duncanvr.
Maybe John Bottomly was a collector at the time. I still can't decide if mine is pale green or green. £15 seems a bit cheap for this as its actually on a wrapper should be worth a little more. Many on ebay even cut to shape priced over £200.
Cut to shape stamp S.G.55 but still used correctly and there are great transit markings... Superb Uppermill dated circular postmark, almost clear Manchester 498 cancel on stamp, dated Manchester postmark, dated Liverpool postmark, Liverpool shipping date stamp. Certainly a UK 100 pounds plus item, I would say.
Similar items with poorer markings sell for 80 - 90 pounds. Forgot to add that your cover entered USA at Boston hence the addition red 5 cents to pay marking.
