I was on a website that had a bunch of Colorado related covers and there was a section labeled doanes. I clicked on several pictures showing the covers and I noticed they all had a bigger sized round postmark on them along with other round but smaller postmarks too. I'm assuming the bigger circle is what they are referring to as a doane. Now I'm left wondering, what makes a doane a doane?

Hello and Greetings!
Here's basic information about Doane postmarks. It's more than the circle or CDS (circular date stamp).

Thanks Battlestamps for the link. It was a interesting read and you're right about it being more than just a circle or CDS. If I understood it correctly a person who collected Doane postmarks would be looking at over 32,000 different ones to complete a collection of all 3 types. I'm gonna look through some of my earlier covers see if I come across any. Thanks again.

Many people collect Doanes either by state or by county. I personally collect Vermont State doanes and doanes from two New York State Counties: Essex and Clinton.

This is the only one I found digging around and it's seen better days. But a Doane is a Doane even if it has part of it torn off it. So please Pardon my Part-Doane (tee-hee) Sorry. I know its time to go to bed when I start to get silly. You should post a couple of your favorites from your collection Glenn.

That is not a Doane. It's too late for most Doane and the style is completely different. And all Doanes have a number in the canceling bars.

Here are some Doane pages from my Vermont Postal History sampler. These were created over a number of years for different showings.

Thanks for showing some good examples Glen. After seeing them it makes it easier to see that you are correct. Mine is not a Doane. Someday I will have a Doane though. They are to interesting for me to not have at least one. Thanks to you too Rusty for checking out the topic.

Luckily Doanes can be found for very low prices. A dealer's dollar box is a good place to look. Anyplace that sells early postcards are a good place to search. Of course ebay will have plenty of them at any given moment and there's sure to be some for a few bucks or less.
