I wish that watermark fluid would have a warning that it can ruin wood furniture on it because some spilled on my brown wooden desk ruining the top as I was checking some stamps.

Depending on what watermark fluid you use, it can react with the finish. This is why I usually try to put a glass top or partial acrylic top over my desks. It looks ugly, but my desktop is usually so cluttered that nobody can see the nice wood finish anyway!
Hopefully, it wasn't too bad for you, jogil! I've been there (not with watermark fluid), so I can commiserate. |

Do you know how I can fix the wood? If it can ruin the paint on the wood, then could it also ruin stamp ink? |

What watermark fluid did you use? It shouldn't actually affect the wood -- only the finish. I'm afraid I can't help you there -- need an expert or someone experienced in wood finish. |

Unisafe is trichlorotrifluoroethane and is used as a cleaning solvent. I am unsure how it might interact with various wood finishes. Do you know the type of finish on the desk? Don |

Quote: ... Apparently "UniSafe" should be changed to "UnSafe" ... No, the product is correctly named; it is only safe for one thing, hence the prefix 'uni'. jogil: You can refinish the spot, or refinish the desk. Take a drawer with you to Home Depot ... Cheers, /s/ ikeyPikey |

jogil, I have the solution. (No pun intended.)
You can go the expensive route or you can use a well-placed drinks coaster.
On a serious note, show a photo and we can be of better help. I suspect that it`s just the finish that`s been affected, which would be a good thing. Easy to fix! |

It looks like a varnish finish on the wood was affected. The desk belonged to my father in law. Right now the computer keyboard is covering the spots. I am the only one who knows about this so far. I will try to get a picture of it when I find a digital camera. I am writing this to let you know so that it doesn't happen to you too. It happened when pouring it into the try. Some spilled down the side of the bottle and onto the desk.
I just bought the watermark fluid yesterday. In the past, I don't remember this ever happening with this liquid before. It worked for what I bought it for. It showed that what I thought were thin spots on some stamps were actually grease spots since they got dark last when wet and they got light last when dry. The opposite would have occurred for thin spots. Under normal light, they both look the same. The fluid also helped somewhat to diminish the grease spots a little bit too.

Oftentimes one can just use a mild abrasive such as toothpaste to remove the discolored varnish. You probably won't have to go down all the way the the wood, which would be nice. We'll look forward to seeing the photo. |
