Can some one explain the purpose of the other stamps on this cover? Were they just thrown on or did they pay a fee? I see they are US issued, philipines issue and japan issue.
Nice. Philippines under Japanese occupation. That does appear to be first day of issue for the two stamps on upper right, May 7 1943. Don't know why the additional postage, but I think it looks legitimately used, rather than a philatelic concoction. Although, on second thought, those additional stamps look to be stuck on with some sort of glue. Might be an interesting project for you to research. Are they an extra tax? Is that black Manila cancel real? That's what postal history is all about.
Michael J. O'Doherty was the Archbishop of Manila during WWII, so there seems to be no problem there. The four extra stamps present a problem - it looks like they were added later.
The commonwealth stamps appear to have been used before being put on this cover, and since the US portion was not blocked out, I am not sure why the Japanese censors let it pass.
ah, good eyes, revcollector. I didn't notice the old cancels on the Commonwealth stamps. I think that cinches it for me. That and the glue. Someone has taken a perfectly good cover and tried to make it better, doing a poor job at it. Too bad, since the Japanese Military police censor stamp made it interesting.
