Has any one ever done a comparison of the 2 George VI album sets and if so, what are your findings and which would you recommend?

I lusted for a few years over the SG KG VI Hingeless Album, but the price was exorbitant. They finally removed it from their website and catalog.

The KGVI hingeless album is available, as far as I know, and I don't think the price compares badly with Lighthouse etc prices for similar albums, and is, I suspect, cheaper than Palo

There's a cheaper version without mounts. I have the previous four-volume ring-bound edition, and earlier fastbound, single volume editions frequently pop up at auctions, with or without stamps.

GeoffHa: Could you scan a blank page from the 4 volume set so I can see the spacing between stamps in the pages?

The Palo and SG standard are similar in price but the Palo hingeless is considerably more than the SG hingeless.

I am trying to find out which has the better coverage.

Palo has enough space between stamps to use mounts in the standard but I am not sure SG does. I am waiting for a scan of the SG page where you can actually see the stamps and spacing on the page.

SG gives very little info on what the pages contain compared to Palo or even how many pages in the set.

I'll have a go tomorrow, although it may not show you too much. I suspect that one reason that Gibbons extended from four volumes to six was to increase spacing to reflect greater use of mounts.

I haven't seen the Palo, but my guess would be that, like the SG, it won't include variations of perforation etc.

Palo also has pages for Queen Victoria, Edward VII, and King George V (also 2 versions), as well as all the early years for a huge list of Commonwealth countries all in SG format.

Thanks GeoffHa -- I thought it was gone.

Now I have to debate purchasing a $1000 album to hold $30 worth of stamps

Well, mine has a pretty low value collection too, but I picked up the albums empty for around forty quid in an auction. I actually like the red, single-volume, fastbound versions, and will try for a cheap one of those.

I've got one of the old fast-bound SG ones, like the red ones but with a green cover. So far as I know the coverage inside has not changed. It's a basic/simple coverage which only contains one example of each stamp, except where there are two watermark varieties, and so there is one space for each. They include spaces for postage dues and officials. All the omnibus issues are split on the individual country pages, which I would have preferred to see at the back, in whole sets - but I'm nit-picking really.

Here is a sample page of the new 6 volume SG set. Picture they sent is poor but it does have spaces between all the stamp boxes

If you put the 1948 Silver wedding set in MNH or UMM in it, hopefully will be worth many times $30.

GeoffHa:

Are the Indian Feudatory stamps included in your 4 volume set?

Yes, Indian States are there, as are officials and dues, which seem to have been dropped for the new version. This is odd - not a long reign, and the space saved isn't appreciable.

I wonder why Gibbons's site says that officials aren't included, when the pic they sent you clearly shows that they are!

Pic came from their distributor in the US. They want you to spend a bunch of money but have poor descriptions with very little information to base a decision on.

Does your 4 volume set have an index in the front?
