Hello Yellow-Cad

I have a number of these stamps and I understand that the top stamp is Sun yet-sen (ca. 146-1949) and the country they represent was known as the Republic of China (mainland) which fell in 1949 and Sun's followers retreated to Taiwan. The bottom stamp may be Chiang kai-shek.

I find the stamps in Scott's but what I don't find is the particular stamps with these particular over prints. Thanks, Jim

In the Scott catalog, you will find them at the end of the regular listings for Republic of China.

Top: Northeastern Provinces #42(1947)
Bottom: Northeastern Provinces #9(Apr1946)

In the top line, the 2nd and 3rd characters (counting from right to left) are "east" and "north".

Both stamps depict Dr. Sun Yat-sen.

Thanks for the help. I'm looking in the area of Scott's that is referred to but now I'm wondering if my second stamp isn't Scott's #196 in the Sinkiang listing. Please let me know if that is correct. Thanks, Jim

Your stamp is definitely Northeast China. The overprints look similar, but 2 of the characters identifying the region are different. From right to left, the 2nd and 3rd characters identify the region. Even if you can't read the characters, if you look at those 2 characters in the Sinkiang overprint shown in Scott, you will see they are different from what you have on your bottom stamp.

Right. I see how the over print matches Northeastern Provinces but what confused me is the stamp they show with that over print in the NE section is a different Sun Yat-sen stamp.

Yeah, Scott does do that on occasion. It's very annoying. If the overprint is substantially different, they really need to illustrate it, rather than just a sample overprint from one of the set.

In this case, it's not even obvious they should be part of the same set. The one overprint they illustrated is the one stamp in the "set" that has a different overprint AND different stamp design -- I believe the other 3 stamps have the same overprint layout (only difference is in denomination characters).
