Gidday guys,
So last year I decided to invest in something from here (Australia) and so I purchased a set of 1886 QV South Australia Specimen set.
I had seen many of these stamps used but I hadn't seen these before.
I've only started collecting in the last couple of years by the way.
Anyway I checked these in a catalogue and they were ridiculous values.
I mean the set was like US$80,000.
I paid $AU1,400.
It is definitely perf 10 but other than that I know bugger all on these.
My question is...Was this a good investment?
Any comments welcomed.
Cheers

i haven't got a catalogue as yet because im not sure what's best to buy.

Are they mint, never hinged? It appears that MNH will command a premium but note that hinged sets on ebay have sold in the US $275 - US $750 range. If they are never hinged, there is a currently listing at around US$2500 but no sales at that price

Stanley Gibbons (2009 edition) lists these at £750. Surprised anyone would part with that much money without knowing what they are spending it on.

Frank

The £5 grey was issued in 1886, and the £5 brown (perf 11 1/2 x 12 1/2) in 1896. If you're collecting general Commonwealth, SG's 1840-1970 is the best volume, although there is a range of more detailed catalogues for individual Commonwealth countries/areas.

"Stamps" and "investment" are uneasy bedfellows!

Your 'investment' of $1,400 will take a long time to recover.
