World Stamp Show Ny2016 - At The Show

There are $1 and $2 cover boxes, and there are $1,000,000 items for sale and everything in between. One can spend as much as one wants to.

Plan on an unlimited budget and then exceeding it.

APS Facebook shows just 7 posts on their facebook page for the biggest show in 10 years?

Soccerfan, I have to worn you, I think I've already purchased every cover with a three cent US 1851- 1861 stamp, priced under $20.00.

Now I need to sell a few items I brought along to replenish my budget.

APS staff are extremely busy manning their booth, assisting with show operations, making presentations, and so forth. The show has its own Facebook page (World Stamp Show-NY2016) that is offering more extensive coverage of the show for those looking for more photos.

It literally takes 20 seconds to make a facebook/twitter post from a cell phone. There is no excuse for not providing more on-line exposure to the event. Snap a photo, type a caption, hit submit. It's pretty easy.

So do it.

Volunteers are welcome.

Photos have been posted here on SCF that I am certain you can get permission to re-purpose.

Post them to Twitter (remember the hashtag!), Instagram, et al.

But as said, it is easy. This is just not the APS for the social generation at this point.

"snap a photo; type a caption; hit submit. It's pretty easy.........." Easy for you to say. But not everyone may be as "advanced" as you are with social media. I have a smart phone used to make phone calls; some texting; and occasional e-mail check.

I take pictures with a digital camera that is seldom with me. I did make an exception and took it with me to Mesa Verde National Park a couple weeks ago. MV, by the way, has a small post office and canceling device, so you can send postcards with a Park cancel.

I am not seeing anywhere the interest I thought I would in this show reflected in online discussion boards.

All in all, I think that the show has been poorly represented digitally (both before and during the show).

This may have been by design, organizers might have felt having things like a 24/7 live feeds and/or making the talks available online would decrease the number of folks attending in person.

My opinion is that our hobby seems to be stuck in some kind of Luddite mode based upon the justification of 'our current members are not that technology-centric'. In other words, the justification is based upon 'what they have' and has little to do with 'what might be'.

I would have loved to go to the show but my health issues make it impossible at this time (going back in for another cancer operation next week). If they had had a subscription service and a 'pay-per-view' service I would have certainly paid to participate. Who knows how many others were in the same boat. And surely a younger person who might have interest in philately would gravitate toward attending virtually before spending the time and money to travel around the world to NYC.

I do not agree with basing these kinds of decisions upon existing membership demographics. It is like only looking in the read view mirror. The future is ahead of us, not behind us.

You may be right, but if so, this is pretty stupid thinking. Even under perfect circumstances, no more than a tiny percentage of North American and world collectors would ever be able to attend in person. Why not do things like allow people to view exhibits online? Or to attend seminars via webinar? There are a gazillion things they could have done to allow people to partcipate remotely.

Cost, both in equipment, staff and service. There are 4,000 frames of exhibits. Who is going to take pictures of all those images, upload and organize them? Could it even be done, by a couple of people, before the show is over? There are numerous seminars occurring concurrently. Each one needs a camera, computer, and operating staff. Convention centers, including Javits, commonly require the use of their captive IT service provider for all audiovisual and telecommunications equipment, staffing, setup and takedown and these are NOT cheap.

What you are requesting would add tens of thousands of dollars in costs to the show and cannot be budget justified. Actually, over a weeklong show like this, with as many events as there are, it could be a $200K budget item. Not going to happen.

I apologize for pulling this thread off track. I just meant that APS should have been and needs to be more immersed in social media. They should have postings, photos, and perhaps even a quick daily video recap using Periscope on their social media platforms.
