World Stamp Show Ny2016 - At The Show

The frames? Or the exhibits? I have heard that the new frames were rather poor quality. And that they ran out of screws to secure them!?

If either is true, it was not apparent, but keep in mind they had to procure thousands of frames for short-term, basically disposable use. However, the lighting was definitely poor - too dim, with fixtures way too high up and not bright. It was like viewing frames in an aircraft hanger. I'm going to add an LED flashlight to my standard bag of show attendance gear.

Sorry...By "frames" I meant what was displayed. It was the first time I've seen exhibits displayed this way, so I have no comment on the quality of the Frames holding the exhibits.
The problem I had with the lighting was the glare it caused. I had to bob and weave to get complete looks at items.

In my experience by show standards the light was pretty good for most of the Javits Center. It was actually darker in some parts of the center where the ceiling was lower in some parts of the dealer bourse area.

Bobbing & weaving indeed, stampcrow, though perhaps, this week, an analogy to dancing like a butterfly ...

Non-reflective glass for an acre-plus of exhibits would have been quite an expense - and the frames would have had to be much stronger, to support the weight - but perhaps the lighting could have been more diffuse to begin with?

The frames were not intended to be disposable. The plan is/was to sell them off to other groups that hold stamp shows. I understand that they had more than enough people interested in them. The frames sounded pretty good, especially the part about them weighing half of what the old standard frames weighed.

Including 1867 Paris Expo items. A Dunlop Tire Company perfin stamp used on a Zep cover. Military items etc. Very unique and amusing.

2)Postal History of the Thirteen Colonies.
Museum worthy items. Stunning stuff.

3)U.S.Civil War Era Fiscal History.
Great old documents with BOB stamps. A ships Bill Of Sale. Old Brewers bonds.

4)Graf Zeppelin-The Postal Globetrotter.
Wonderful covers with great information on the various Graf Zeps flights.

Let me rephrase my question: What does a buyer or seller spend for a weekend on lodging, meals, transportation, and show admission fees for a large event like this?

As a "buyer"...? I spent approximately $150.00 on round trip train from Rochester to Penn Station. $30.00 for the week on subway fare. $200.00ish on food. $0.00 on lodging and $0.00 on admission. Also, I spent maybe $100.00 at the show. I was on a pretty tight budget.

A tight budget indeed; how many sellers were there? Were you able to find what you needed?

Seriously, I am very curious as to how "soft" the market was at the show. How did you find the supply and demand there?

Approximately 150 dealers attended, mostly US based. I've heard that the show organizers provided insufficient assistance or advance planning to ensure that non-US dealers could clear US Customs with their dealer stocks, and therefore few foreign dealers attended. My impression was that there was plenty of supply and demand. The show was busy the entire week except the last two days were quiet. Compared to most shows, there were far more "high-end" dealers, and these dealers appeared to be relatively quiet, simply because that customer segment is smaller. The market did not seem soft to me at all, although I will say, the dealers I dealt with were "willing to deal" by selling at prices lower than those marked.




New York is expensive but you have choices. For a weekend:
Lodging: $0 to $2,000, depending on whether you bunk with a friend or family, or book a suite at the Peninsula. Good rooms could be had for $250/night.
Meals: $200 to $3,000, depending on whether you have pizza slices or dine at Masa and Peter Luger's.
Transportation: $12 to $300, depending on whether you use the subway or Uber Black. The subway was $2.75 per trip.
Admission fees: NY2016 was $0; other shows can be $5 to $10 per day.

What are the dealer comparing to? Last few show they went to? Regional shows? Other World shows? I'm confused.

My Daughters destination wedding is next week. Filling the, #10 on cover w/pennypost space in my collection, isn't a priority.
But...I still had fun thumbing through boxes of covers. There were plenty in the $5.00 to $50.00 range. I bought a few.
I can do better price wise at local auctions and estate sales. But the show had a greater number of items then I've ever seen in one place. Unless you were looking for something very eclectic, I think you could find it at the show.
