Just getting into the hobby and came across this postmark on an old postal card dated August 29, 1884.

The one is question is in the bottom-left. Large bold capital "H", "8-29", "3 P" (one hour after the other postmark).

The other postmark I'm a bit more familiar with; however, I don't normally see the year outside the cancellation. "New York", "Aug 29", "2 P", "PO", and "84" outside the postmark. The oval cancellation has 6 vertical bars with what appears to be "30" within a circle.

Anyhow, I was wondering if anyone has seen the postmark with the big "H" in it (or something similar) and knows anything about it.

Thanks!

Yes... you really need new images to see anything. The top part is a NY duplex with circular information and an oval killer parts. If the killer part has a letter H inside (some had numbers and some had letters but the quality of photo is bad so I cannot see) then that is the Station ID and it could be related to the bottom postal marking.
Better photos and possibly the entire card?

The main marking obliterating the stamp images appears to be a "Duplex" kind of cancellation. The separate 'circular' marking appears to me to be a "Carrier's" marking, though I am not sure on this point?

I cannot write about what was usual in New York at the end of the 19th century.
But I can assert that in Berlin (Germany) similar, but smaller cancels were used by the postmen to prove they had handled this letter or card.

Heinrich

Typically, carrier postmarks were backstamped and they plainly said "Carrier". I wonder if H was a zoned branch office.
