My main library has a copy of Stanley Gibbons Postcard Catalog from 1982 in their reference collection. I'm looking for info on pre-WW 2 formular postcards from Latvia. Is it worth taking the drive to look thru it or wouldn't it cover what I'm looking for? Or is there a better source?
I remember seeing this catalogue years ago and if I recall correctly it gives an overview of collecting picture postcards from a British perspective.
I wouldn't expect it to cover British or foreign postal stationery or formular cards.
The old Higgins & Gage postal stationery catalogues listed some formular cards such as some early Ottoman cards but I don't have the letter L volume that covers Latvia.
Thanks nigelc. I kind of thought that might be the case. The local library used to have a Higgins & Gage way back when but don't seem to show it now. Maybe I'll check in the surrounding areas.
I have a copy of the 2004/5 Michel postal stationary catalog for Eastern Europe, with listing for Latvia. If you could post an image of your post card, perhaps I could look it up. However, if by the term "formular postcard" you are referring to a postcard supplied by the post office, but without a printed stamp image as franking, then sorry, they are not listed.
Thank you ekbustad. Actually, digging thru some books just now, I found a listing of postcards with pictures and H&G numbers. I purchased 13 postcards from Latvia for $6.95 and $5 postage and they're still in the mail. 11 are printed with the stamp. But if memory serves me, I think there were some postcards of identical? design & value but different in size. So maybe I'll have to see what I have when they get here and ask some more appropriate questions at that point.
