Of course, troops from all over the British and French Empires fought in WW1. I think the point is that, in Canada, Black Canadians were discouraged from enlisting, and presumably rarely saw combat, despite their wishes. The US maintained this approach with its segregated military in WWII, when it took lengthy lobbying before Black troops were able to undertake combat, rather than support, duties.
