Renewable Cabinet-Scale Silica Gel Dehumidifier via Amos:

Renewable = you only plug it in, now & again, to purge the captured moisture

Cabinet-Scale = one hundred square cubic feet is more than 4x4x4' and less than 5x5x5' ... so this would work for a small closet

Silica Gel = similar to what you get in those little packets marked "dessicant"

Dehumidifier = that time of year, up here in the northern hemisphere

This product unit can be found at the local Home Depot for $29.95.

Note that this device does not have any indictors of humidity levels, it would have been nice if they had included a way for users to see and monitor the humidity levels.

Any cabinet or closet that this is used in should be relatively air-tight. You would not want to be dehumidifying the entire house with this small unit.

Another method for lowing humidity in a small space is to simply add an light bulb to the space and leave it on.

Key is to monitor the humidity levels. Stamps should always be stored in an environment with less than 50-55% relative humidity to reduce possibility of mold or accelerated aging. http://siarchives.si.edu/sites/defa...ndards_0.pdf

It may be better/more efficient to keep your house humidity levels within the spec than trying to just do a small space.

Thank you to ikey for bring this topic up, as hobbyists we spend a lot of time/money on 'acid free' pages and proper mounts but environmental storage conditions are probably just as critical.

For the benefit of English readers, what is "humidity"?

GeoffHa,
The amount of water vapor in the air. Relative humidity is the amount of water vapor in the air expressed as a percentage of the maximum amount that the air could hold at a given temperature.

Don

Apologies - my comment was an ironic one about English weather.

Why turn a $30 solution in to a $40 solution? Imagine that you want to put one of these in every closet of your house. Real-time relative humidity instrumentation would be a redundant expense.

From the product description: There is an indicator window with special "moisture meter crystals" that change from blue (when dry) to pink (when wet) to indicate that the unit needs to be renewed.

I would be reluctant to place a heat source in a 'relatively air-tight' space.

Warming that space may lower the relative humidity, but is also raises the possible absolute humidity.

What happens when the lights go out?

This unit, as configured, uses very little electricity (periodic purging vs 25-40-60 watts 24/7/365) and does not require that you wire every cabinet & closet for grid power.

I think they've got it right.
