Whilst working on our Additional Halfpenny collection we came across a page which we transcribed as follows:-
London 26th June 1829 My Dear Mother I dare say you would like us back again, and ourselves are beginning to get tired of London. We expect the point will be settled at the Treasury today - in that case we will hear the result tomorrow. But we would not leave this before Wednesday at the soonest, as there are visits to members to make, Sugar Sales to attend insurances to look after &c unless there was to be a remit to Leith to hurry Father - so we are likely to be near the two months away. Time however does not hang heavy on our hands - we have generally a sufficiency of employment to keep us active. Most of the curiosities I have seen but we are always seeing more. Since John's letter with the wonders therein described, I have visited Kensington Gardens, London Docks and Covent Garden. Father never was at the gardens before nor you I suppose - we were delighted. They are three and a half miles circumference & consist of numerous elegant walks among thickets or lofty rows of trees. There is not a flower to be seen in them. They are properly the grounds attached to Kensington Palace - a large and rather handsome house where some of the Royal Family reside. There is a spring in the grounds, a luxury to drink, and a pond called the Serpentine River is half within their bounds. It seems a serious offence is sometimes committed which is threatened with the punishment it merits in the following Irish inscription.......
(UNFORTUNATELY the next page of the letter has been torn off and we are left to wonder what the inscription was!)
Did you ever watch a video where the amateur sleuth says "I think there is something you should know Inspector" and then the screen goes blank? So, you know the feeling.
Anyway, we are sufficiently intrigued to check Google to see if we can find out what the inscription says –
Watch this space!
Cheers
