Here is a message I got from the China Philatelic Society this week:

'We are in the process of updating the CSS web site, including changes required for the security of financial transactions. Older web browsers will not be compatible with these modern Internet security features. All websites that do financial transactions will have to adopt these new security features by the end of this year.

The changes have been made this week and you may not be able to access the CSS web site. If you are not able to reach the CSS web site, or you receive an error message, you will need to update or change your web browser as described below.'

The message goes on to say that older versions of Windows are no longer compatible, they suggest upgrading to 'Windows 11'. I thought 10 was the latest upgrade.

I use windows 7 and have had no plans to upgrade. I doubt I will be doing so just to access their site. They do go on to say that one can use Chrome to access, which I have, so maybe no immediate issue for me.

I fear this is just the beginning of what will be a major trend. Societies and dealers forcing members and customers into an upgrade to access their sites. Has anyone else run across something like this?

I believe you need to upgrade to Internet Explorer 11. That is not the same as Windows 10, the IE is the browser.

Yes, Microsoft is ending support for IE versions before version 11, hence the reason why websites may start requiring version 11. The new browser is called Edge, available in Windows 10.

Instead of IE start using the latest version of Chrome or Firefox.

Quote:
Beginning January 12, 2016, only the most current version of Internet Explorer available for a supported operating system will receive technical supports and security updates. Internet Explorer 11 is the last version of Internet Explorer, and will continue to receive security updates, compatibility fixes, and technical support on Windows 7, Windows 8.1, and Windows 10.

Stamp1962,
Companies cannot do a lot of reiterative testing with so many browsers, browser versions, operating systems, operating system versions, and plugins (plus all the thousands of combinations they represent). So it is pretty common for them to test against only the most current versions and then post a generic notice to guard against a lot of complaints.

Normally I would say to not pay it too much attention and test using your older browser and operating system (especially if you are doing no commercial activity). But the China location might indicate a bit more caution.

The site isn't in China; it's the China Philatelic Society, based in the US.

Stamps1962, last year I had to upgrade my browser to IE 11 as I stated above, because my stamp website went to a more secure server. That happens every now and then. But it is always a good idea to have the latest version of a browser because of security reasons. This goes for all browsers!

CSS = Cascading Style Sheet (markup code that defines styles in web pages). Current version is CSS3 but most modern browsers support CSS3 properties so I am not sure that is what they meant.

I was looking at the China Philatelic Society (in London), a link would have been helpful! LOL
