I added a mint Scott 17 to my collection and compared it to my older, used version. This is the 1pi on 10kr blue, issued in 1888. The 1 in the number 10 is different in each version. I believe that the used stamp has the "normal" 1 and the Mint version is changed. Does anyone know if any different dies were used on this stamp? Thanks in advance. Used (Normal) Mint (Die ??) And closeups of each

Very interesting . Your stamp is what is call Post in der Levante . And I do have in front of me the Michel and the ank osterreich spezialkatalog and none of them have info about the 2 type of 1 . But this stamp have different perforation type like the one without overprint so may be a different die was used for the numeral or a repair have been done to the die |

Thanks for your comments. I'm at a show right now, but I thought the perfs were the same on both. I'll check again in a few hours. |

Look these 2 one the "1" is not exactly the same , the stamps is Typo but I don't think the black number are, that will explain why so much variation. I still look if I found info on the type of printing used for them |

Partime, so we are researching the stamp as printed before the overprint was done, right? Or were the values and overprint done at the same time? |

I believe that research should concentrate on the stamp BEFORE the overprint. I'm going to a stamp show later today and might be able to find more copies. Thanks for the interest and research. |

Partime, the only info I can find on the basic stamp ( 1883 ) is that it comes in four different perforations. 9, 9.5, 10 & 10.5 are the four.

Peter, my Scott catalogue gives the perfs for design A11 as 9, 9.5, 10, 10.5, 11.5, 12, and 12.5.
There is also a 13.5 perf listed specifically for Austria-Turkish Empire nr. 17.
Also, I don't know if this is relevant, but the watermark for the last printings of Austria nr. 44 is listed as ZEITUNGS-MARKEN rather than BRIEF-MARKEN. |

The cancel makes this one difficult to examine. I'll look for other examples. |

KGB , The perforation you give are for the Austria # 47 in my ANK reference catalogue and it's also the Michel , the 47 also have 2 stamps with different horizontal and vertical perf , they are 9:10 1/2 and 10 1/2:9 FOR THE WATERMARK , Scott is wrong ( as so many time ) for the #47 it's both ZEITUNGS-MARKEN or BRIEFMARKEN ( oder means or in German ) Not sure I understand Michel text ( I use google translate ) , but it's look they give different watermark for different date ( see down ) Now for the POST in der LEVANTE ( what Scott call Austria-Turkish Empire) the one without the PIASTRE or PARA overprint have 9 1/2 ( # 11 A ) or 10 1/2 ( # 11 C ) the one with PARA and PIASTRE overprint are 10 ( # 17 A ) and the 13 1/2 ( # 17 B ) ROBI you are right I forget than last 2 trips I made in Germany I was paying with Euro ( well most was paid with my CC but,,,) My confusion came that I was using not only my AUSTRIAN ( not German ) 2016 Catalogue and also the Österreich Spezialkatalog und Handbuch by Dr. Ulrich FERCHENBAUER published in 1981 and also the the Österreich und Ungarn book by Edwin Mueller publish in 1930 When you are getting very serious about stamps, you get book in all language and all period of time
